Composition of saliva
Saliva is a fluid (pH 6-7) a clear, slightly acidic.
Inorganic components
The most abundant component in the saliva is water (about 99%), followed by the ions Na +, Cl - Ca 2 +, K +, HCO 3 -, H 2 PO 4 -, F -, I -, Mg 2 +, thiocyanate. Ionic composition of saliva, which is different from plasma derived from it though. [9]. Hypotonicity facilitate the sensitivity of taste and hydrates of organic compounds that form a protective layer on the oral mucosa. Resultant bicarbonate serves as a buffering agent and calcium and phosphate to neutralize the acid that would otherwise jeopardize the integrity of the tooth mineral.
